Starbucks found itself in trouble once again for their campaign to encourage voters to get to the polls.

Starbucks offered to give free coffee to anyone who could provide proof that they voted on Election Day. After realizing that this was illegal in some states, stores started to give a tall coffee to anyone who asked for it, regardless of their participation in the election. The idea started from an open blog on the Starbucks website that encourages input from their customers.

According to an MSNBC article, a federal statute prohibits giving away any freebies or paying someone to vote or not to vote.

“Unfortunately, it’s against federal law, it turns out,” said David Ammons, Communication Director for the Secretary of State.  ” So we contacted Starbucks corporation, obviously a wonderful Washington company, but we had to tell them gently that, ‘Hey, this is against federal law.”
